What Would They Have you Believe?

“Why you fool, it’s the educated reader who can be gulled…When did you meet a workman who believes the papers? He takes for granted that they’re all propaganda and skips the leading articles. He buys the papers for the football results and the little paragraphs about girls falling out of windows…He is our problem. We have to recondition him. But the educated public, the people who read the high-brow weeklies, don’t need reconditioning. They’re all right already. They’ll believe anything.” – That Hideous Strength (C.S. Lewis, 1945)

That Hideous Strength is part three of C.S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy, yet is so different from the first volumes, it stands as an independent tale – a dystopian one on par with its contemporary, 1984 by George Orwell. As with 1984, That Hideous Strength is just as relevant now, as it was decades ago.

A lesser author couldn’t pull off switching from a space setting to a terrestrial one, or changing the narration to that of the author, in this final volume. Nor could many authors successfully weave higher themes into a story, but Lewis was an intellectual – when that still meant something – with a penchant for converting high ideas into accessible stories.

Themes of manipulation and control by hidden powers, abuse of science, eugenics (now returning as transhumanism) all are very relevant in our day. Especially applicable are the dangers of turning science into a form of fundamentalism that reduces humans to nothing more than an accident. An accident with no real foundation of truth or reality. This fatal flaw was apparent in the materialist thinking of Lewis’ day, even more so now, with its modern evangelists like Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Sam Harris, et al, masterfully camouflaging their beliefs with science, intermixing the two.

Lewis would also discuss these issues in his classic, The Abolition of Man, and even in the Narnian tale, The Magician’s Nephew. As postmodernism, secularism, transhumanism and other isms return – and the history of their past failures and terrors forgotten – Lewis’ works on the nature of man, science, scientism and society are more important than ever for those not content to be told by the oligarchies what to believe and how to live.

Lewis was a “prophetic critic” in his time, and apparently for our own.

Darkness is Here. Which Side are You On?

In an age lost to myth, all human life nearly vanished from the Earth. War erupted between men and demon. The Blood Rain fell from the skies and the land was scorched and torn. The waters came and completed the ruin of the world.

In time, people ceased believing in such tales. This is what the Darkness wanted. It waited until the stories were forgotten, when most thought it foolish to listen to the warnings of their ancestors. Among the shadows malice lurked, and signs from the Light were ignored. Centuries passed.

A shadowmancer arose to launch a new Scourge. Evils unseen since the ancient wars returned from the Abyss. The modern world would soon fall. No humans could stand against them.

So the Followers thought.

Six Watchers, gifted by the Light, stood to meet the Darkness and destroyed the Dark One’s legions. The shadows receded, their terror extinguished. The Followers had been burnt by the Light.

Except one.

If a lost land could be raised, and the ageless weapon restored, she would have her revenge. New hordes would be brought through the veil. The final merging of both worlds completed. Ancient tales of the coming of the end of days made true.

An Awakening.

Will the Watchers, who had turned back what emerged from the shadows, be able to stand against a new onslaught? They will not fight alone. More of their kind, wielding gifts of great power, have also come forth. The Light surges in us all, but among the Watchers it is untamed and unbound. Only they can defeat what is coming.

In these last hours, they are our only hope.

Lost on Nan Madol

The mysterious Nan Madol is in the news, due to attention from a television show. These ruins of a forgotten city on the island of Pohnpei have long been the center of myth and legend. In one of the opening scenes of Awakening, sequel to Among the Shadows, Ethan, Milena and Kyra, are vacationing on the ancient isle, but they find something unexpected in an empty tomb. A brief excerpt from Awakening

Next to Ethan, Milena put her hands on the boulder. She closed her eyes, and cleared her mind with the box breathing she learned when training with her katanas. The energy began to surge within and she felt it intertwine with Ethan’s.

“On three. One…two…three.”

She opened her eyes, lit green from within, her husband’s burned blue.

“It’s moving!” Kyra yelled…With a little help from gravity, and more from their strength, they rolled the boulder out of the way…

Kyra turned the light on the darkness, chasing it away. “There are steps going down into another chamber.”

“Let me have one of those.” Kyra handed her father his flashlight and he started down. As soon as Ethan reached the last step, the light reflected off a crystal pyramid, twice the width of the boulder, but no taller. It sat dead center in the room, nearly filling it. The low ceiling added to the claustrophobia as Milena and Kyra joined Ethan. Krya approached the pyramid and reached out her hand.

“No, wait!” Milena yelled, running for her a moment too late.

Kyra’s palm pressed on the crystal and light swirled within it, illuminating the room. The walls shimmered and vanished. The tomb, the ruins, the island — all of it — had been replaced by a dusty, vast plain under a blazing sky. Haze obscured the jungle covered hills rising in the distance. Shadows passed over the ground.

Kyra looked into the sky and screamed.

Read how their adventure began in Among the Shadows and continues in Awakening.
