What Lurks in the Darkness

“It is the doom of men that they forget.” – Merlin (Excalibur 1981)

A few months back I wrote:

A fragmented comet is thought by many to be the source of the first global catastrophe (12,000 B.C.). What caused the upheaval at the end of the Bronze Age is still uncertain (1177 B.C.). During the early years of what would become known as the Middle Ages, a supervolcano in what is ocean between Sumatra and Java sent the world into chaos (535 A.D.).

Humanity has witnessed, and barely survived, a number of global catastrophes. We’ve not seen such level of disaster from nature in centuries. Will our luck hold out? We pass through what is known as the Taurid meteor stream twice a year. These are the remnants of a fragmented comet that came apart 10,000 years ago. Twice a year our world is at risk. These events can be attributed to the June Taurids:

  • On June 25, 1178, an impact on the Moon created the massive Giordano Bruno crater.
  • On June 30, 1908, a fragment exploded over Tunguska in Russia, destroying 2000 square kilometers of forest. A few hours earlier, and Moscow would have been destroyed.
  • In late June 1975, a swarm of objects impacted the Moon.

There could be more. The Bronze Age collapse is certainly suspicious, and perhaps the catastrophe at the end of the last Ice Age. June (which is now upon us) isn’t the only time Earth is in the danger zone. In Late October, the Taurid meteors often provide a little show — the Halloween Fireballs.

Is it a coincidence that cultures around the world have celebrations around late October focusing on fear and death? What was the common origin, obscured by centuries of religions and beliefs? Randall Carlson has searched through the (supposed) myths, old histories, and the Solar System, and found a cosmic demon that has terrorized Earth for centuries.

Is Halloween’s origins not in earthly terrors but ones that came from the sky?

Perhaps these celestial demons been terrorizing mankind for much of its existence.

When will they return?

Attacks from Outer Space

If NASA would make its role in planetary defense more well known, people would better grasp the importance of the space program. Still a too-small fraction of expenditures, there are nonetheless many men and women around the world working to protect humanity. Robin George Andrews’ book, How to Kill an Asteroid, takes us behind the scenes into these little-known programs. The Solar System is full of rocks big enough to destroy cities, countries, and entire civilizations.

One thing Andrews doesn’t cover in his book, is the other threat from space: Solar storms and superstorms, some of which could also crumble modern civilization. NASA and NOAA monitor the solar weather closely, but on Earth we have not done enough to harden our infrastructure, as depicted in William R. Forstchen’s novel, 48 Hours. A Coronal Mass Ejection may have nearly ended humanity, as Robert Schoch outlines in Forgotten Civilization. Threats from the sky aren’t just conjecture, we know they have struck Earth in the past.

Next time you wonder why we explore space, wonder why we don’t spend more time and money protecting the planet.

News From the Past & A Warning From Above

If you have completely lost interest in what the media chooses for news every night and in the daily papers, and the incompetence of the government makes you want to never turn the news on again, here’s some interesting recent stories:

The latest finds on Stonehenge indicate it started as a huge graveyard. Stonehenge’s importance for the dead has long been known, but these finds continue to roll back myths about aliens and druids building the ancient structure.

There’s a lot of empty space in Pacific Ocean and there has long been speculation of lost lands (and civilizations). Now the remains of a micro-continent scientists have named Mauritia have been found.

The Sahara continues to reveal North Africa was more than a desert in ancient times, giving up remains of stone age peoples.

And while the government can’t agree on what to waste our money on next, asteroids have been making a number of visits to Earth as of late. Impact events have changed Earth’s, and our, history in the past.

But, hey, Congress is busy buying each other’s votes and pretending they are looking out for you. You have nothing to worry about.
